ARTS1690; The Structure of Language

What Is Linguistics?

Linguistics seeks to understand the question “what is it about our underlying competence (intuition) that enables us to find ungrammatical sentences?”.
The linguist's goal is to reveal the laws of human language (the same way physicists reveal the laws of the world around us), and to discover what things are common to all languages (come from UG).
Not to tell us what how we ought to be using language, but to describe how we are using language.

Language structure refers to sound system, meaning and grammar.
